Fairy stones are concretions of glacial sand, clay and calcite (calcium carbonate) and also contain Titanium and other Rare Earth Elements and are estimated to be over 10,000 years old. This type of fairy stone, aka Calcite Fairy Stone, is only found in Northern Quebec, Canada. They were formed on the bottom of very big lakes with a glacier origin and are found in the soft deposits of the shores of lakes and rivers. It is not the same as staurolite which is also called fairy stone. These fairy stones have a natural shape of smooth, flattened or puffy discs with one or more discs growing together. The colors range from dark grey to white and some are sandy beige to gray. You will find some that have one side smooth while the other side having irregular markings from fossil micro-organisms which resemble fossilized plant life.
Native people living in the far North in Quebec believed that wearing a Fairy Stone would protect them against bad spirits and bring them good health and prosperity.
